Our Journey

Ministry began in 1802 in a converted schoolhouse located on the property owned by Mr. William
Shepherd, and was called ‘Shepherd’s Chapel’. In 1838 a two-story brick building replaced the old
wooden building. In 1850 a great revival was held and sixty converted to the Lord. In 1859 that building
was demolished and materials were used in constructing the church structure we see today. In 1975
heavy winds caused much damage and requiring extensive repairs. In 1991 an addition was completed
on the present-day structure which is used as a Fellowship Hall and Sunday School rooms. During this
time Shepherds was a four-point charge (Essex and King and Queen) sharing a minister. The
congregation started a campaign to become a station church (have its own minister). In 2000 the goal
of becoming a station church was achieved with Hudson Hornsby as the first minister. In 2001 a
renovation to the sanctuary began and was completed within four weeks. These renovations included
new padded pews, new carpeting, refinishing of the original wooden floors and reupholstering of the pulpit bench.
